The Christian Journey

In the regular Lay Salvatorian formation session held at 11th Street, New Manila, Quezon City, on May 13, 2012, Sr.

ChristianJourney-00 Irma Caumeran, SDS talked about the life of a Christian.

“Being a Christian is like going on travel, the destination is the goal of loving God and others. Along the way, one meets others and touches lives, learns and creates many experiences that make up life”, she explained.

As the wheels turn, the cycle is constant. The Christian person recognizes his needs, employs possibilities as he lets go and comes out of his comfort zone and begins the process of transformation, a change which results in values that are exhibited as he leads his life to follow Christ. A step further leads him to experience something out of this world, a transcendence beyond words and what follows is a deeper, more meaningful commitment to love and serve God.

The path of the world he travels, he only passes once, says Stephen Grellet, for like any other, a Christian only has one life. And he endeavors to make meaning, through good works, for all material things he would leave behind when the goal is reached.

As he travels through life, he gets to know himself, believe in himself and gain in wisdom and knowledge. He finds himself facing challenges, overcoming obstacles that block his way and taking time out for God and learning from Him by His example of great selfless love.

He then comes to a realization that indeed, his existence in the world was not from random sampling or selection process, nor an accident, but a part of his Creator’s plan.

The way to being a Christian involves accepting one’s strength and the limitations of our capacity to do good or evil. As humans, we are sinners, we do things that displease God; our selfishness and lack of concern for others, we think of ourselves as infallible as we discover and create scientific and technological advances which make what seems impossible happen and our utter disrespect and irresponsible attitude towards our environment add up to sins of pride, hatred, lust, envy, gluttony, sloth and covetousness, and we render ourselves unable and unworthy of a good relationship with God.

The way to Christianity is composed of four roads, the roads of prayer, faith, discipline and action, each of which one has to travel through. Prayer is our personal communication with God, a testament of our faith, which allows us to do all things. Faith helps one to believe without seeing any tangible evidence of God’s being. Discipline is the important ingredient to success, for it enables us to excel. Action is the proof of the Christian commitment, to work for others in the glory of God.

The Christian’s travel though life is also in stages, searching and discovering, responding and believing, seeking belongingness and making time for mission work with the promise of commitment to service.

The Christian makes big and difficult decisions. He decides to share his time, his resources, skills, his support and sympathy, and makes use of his authority to help others. He acknowledges his weaknesses and decides to change. This allows him to strike a meaningful balance in his life.

ChristianJourney-01And towards the end, he would look back at his Christian life and be able to say, “What a journey it has been, and God was with me all the way.
